Tara and Appropriation

In this video, Mark interviews Tara. The first question he asks her is, “Why do you do all the things?”

When I reflect on Tara's response, I recall how I used to feel small in my spirituality. I believed that I had to do certain things or behave certain ways for me to be recognized or approved of in the spiritual community. This was an idea I had created on my own, one that my monkey mind wanted me to believe.

Through exploration of my own spiritual journey, I discovered that my place and the depth of my spirituality are determined by myself and how I choose to interact with this world I am part of.

Mark asks Tara, “What if I don't believe you because you are white?”

This subject has become an object of discomfort for many, including myself. The topic of race, different cultures, and their appropriation has spread across the world through the news, in papers, and now on social media. Where social media was meant to be a place for bringing people together, this subject has, in many ways, spread them even further apart.

When I look at people, I see humans who bleed red the same as I do. I see a face that could be familiar, a smile that brightens a room. The phrase “I don't see colour” can be triggering, especially coming from a white-presenting person, but it is truly the way I feel.

We all come from and are held by Pachamama (Andean), Unchi Maka (Lakota), Bhumi Devi (Hinduism), Papatūānuku (Māori), Mother Earth, and the countless other names she has been given by people across the world.

As you listen to Tara speak, remember to pay attention to the feelings that arise within you. Notice them, sit with them, and explore them. They may bring you great insights.
